Jute seeds are scattered on cultivated gray alluvial soil usually during showers in April and can be continued till May. Harvesting begins after 3 months of planting when the flowers fall. The plants are 8-12 feet high when it is cut off with stickles at the ground level. Jute stalks are cut and tied into bundles. The Jute bundles pass through various processes thereafter such as retting, stripping, washing, squeezing and drying, packing into bales and transporting. Through the process of retting, jute is prepared to get extracted from the wooden stalks by immersing the stalks in water till the fibers can get separated from the wood. Stripping involves separating the fibers by breaking the stalks inside the water itself. The process of washing follows whereby the fibers are cleansed in water of tamarind followed by fresh water. Excess water is then squeezed out and the fibers are put for drying under the sun for about 3 days. The last process in the cultivation of jute is packing it into bales and transporting it to the mills or the market.

 

Usages of jute are innumerable. It can be blended with other natural and synthetic fibers to create variety of cloth fabrics. It may be used to make packaging materials, ropes and hessian cloth. Since it is purely bio-degradable, inexpensive as well as durable, industries find out various usages of the product. Jute products include rugs, carpets, curtains and even furniture is made from jute. Jute can be used to make paper and acts as a healthy substitute for paper made from trees. Used for protection of rooting plants as well as safeguarding the quality of perishable items from any type of damage, Jute is indispensable in all the sectors of agriculture, trade, and commerce. It is used in processes related to manufacturing of paints, chemicals, cosmetics, and medicines.
